Welcome to the SMSU Writing Center!

  • The Writing Center will open for Fall Semester 2019 on Tuesday, Sept. 3rd (the day after Labor Day). The Writing Center will be closed when SMSU is closed (Fall Break, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Break, and due to weather cancellations/closures).
  • If you have had an existing account for several years and have never updated your profile, you will be asked to update it before using it the first time this academic year. Please change your email to your "my.smsu.edu" address. Also, if you would like to receive text reminders about appointments, please enter your cell phone number and related information as well.
  • If you haven't visited the Writing Center before, please register for an account by clicking the link to the left. Be sure to use your "my.smsu.edu" email address and not your StarID. This scheduling system is not linked to the StarID system.

When making an appointment, you will be asked if you want a face-to-face session with a writing consultant in BA 527, an etutoring session, or a meeting online.

If you choose a face-to-face session:

  • You are making an appointment to meet the writing consultant in the Writing Center (BA 527).
  • Please bring your textbook, syllabus, assignment sheet, and any writing you've done to your appointment.

If you choose an etutoring session:

  • You are making an appointment for your paper to be reviewed.
  • After saving the appointment time, you need to then attach your paper using the yellow folder icon at the top of the schedule. We prefer that your paper is uploaded as a .doc or .rtf file. We are not able to make in-text comments on .pdf files but can provide some overall comments and annotations.
  • The Writing Center consultant will use the appointment time to review your paper and insert comments.
  • The paper with its comments will be uploaded to your appointment at the end of the appointment time.
  • You will need to log in back here and go to your appointment to view the paper with its comments.

If you choose to meet online:

  • You are making an appointment to chat online with the writing consultant at the time of your appointment.
  • Please log back in here at the start of your appointment time and click on the appointment box in the schedule.
  • There you should see a link to start or join the chat. When you enter the chat, you'll have the option to paste in your paper to a whiteboard where both you and the tutor can make notes on it.
